There have been rumors claiming that there’s going to be a ceramic white PS3 unveiled in North America to follow the one that’s already in Japan. Filings with the FCC have even shown pictures of the alleged PlayStation 3. Sony denies these rumors.
Another day, another PS3 rumor…Last week, an alleged Best Buy memo revealed that the 80GB PS3 would be discontinued and “This means that there currently isn’t a version that is PS2-compatible,” the memo points out, before ending with the news that Sony has not yet made any announcements about new products. Sony has been faced with lagging sales of the 80GB PlayStation 3 so this is not surprising news to me and it’s been said they’ll focus instead on finding a real competitor for Microsoft’s Xbox 360 new Elite model.
Arstechnica reports today that their “mole” has infromed them that 80GB PS3 is indeed dead and that Sony will soon offer a 120-160GB with a Dual Shock 3 controller for the same price, $499.
I just purchased my PS3 80GB so if Sony is going to offer a 120 gig for the same price.. that does not make me happy but if they’re gonna ditch the backwards compatability…all I can think is “Thank God I got it when I did” because the only reason I spent the extra $100 bucks was for the backwards compatability that was missing with my Xbox 360 and most of my old Xbox games.
A Sony representative told Wired via e-mail that, “I caught up with all of the posts and news last night, and as you know, we don’t comment on rumors and speculation.” The media speculates that Sony will keep mum on this one until February’s Game Developers’ Conference.
