I hate Dotster!
I’m working on a website for a customer who happens to be hosted at Dotster. Can you believe I can not get a WordPress installed on his webspace after working there for a freaking year!? Me either. It’s so wack. I’m so frustrated. I know it’s not me I did everything right. Grr!
Anyway’s I ended up installing him on my webhost! Haha! WTF? Uh yeah. I was sick of messing around with their wacked out settings. I got everything installed I’m just waiting for his name servers to propagate. What I’m gonna try and do is export it over to Dotster once it’s created..will that work? Well..that’s the plan.

Yea it will work. If you ftp everything individually in addition to doing a MySQL dump of his database and then uploading it to the dotster db server. Good luck with that. I hear IRC can be helpful for walking you through that….occasionally.
Wow…surprise. shock.
I exported the database to an xml file and I know I have the database username correct the internal host name and the password correct I even double checked with Chris M.
But when I FTP the wordpress directory up to webspace and fix the permissions.
I go to install.php and I got nothing but a blank page..I could see his favicon and no 404 error page just blank. Nada.
I followed the damn directions!!
I finally gave up after trying every variation of the host name and the user name etc.. etc..
I changed the name servers and uploaded the site to my server.
Tada worked like a charm.

Thing is I have to eventually switch him back to his host so i thought it might be easier to export the database … but I might actually have to call into tech support.
*tears..runs away in shame*
There are guides out there for wordpress migrations. Basically you have to do a new install, transfer his themes and plugins etc and do a import of his old site.
Take a look at http://technosailor.com/2006/07/05/wordpress-to-wordpress-import/
Don’t know if it will help but it’s a start.
Chris M. Helped me figure out how to get it to work on Dotster by using phpinfo.php which will give me the direct path of the wordpress database.
I guess he had a customer who figured it out way back when and he saved the email just in case he ever needed it.
I havn’t tried it yet but I guess once you get the direct path you just change the path in the index.php file and install..or that’s the theory at least.
If that doesn’t work I’ll just export the database which I know I can do because I’ve done it before on Dotster but it just bugged me that I couldn’t do a fresh install after all the freaking time. Grr!
I’ll use the link though because I’ll need a guide.
Thanks again.
how’s the new job?
